Middle School World Languages
The St. Charles Middle School World Language Program, revised in 2018, enables middle school students to learn not only the Spanish language but also about the cultures where Spanish is spoken. Students complete a culture course in 6th grade followed by first year Spanish in 7th grade and continue working on their Spanish language skills in 8th grade to round out their 3-year middle school experience.
The Spanish texts used at St. Charles are introductory high school level texts, and, as such, are appropriately challenging for our students. Each student’s performance will determine whether he or she chooses to receive credit for Spanish 1 at the high school level and enter high school at the second year level as a freshman. To do this successfully, the student must have a firm grammar and vocabulary base, achieved through regular study outside the classroom, an approach which has yielded good results for many former St. Charles students.
Middle school is the perfect time to expose students to a diverse curriculum, enabling them to find their strengths and their interests. It is for this reason that the foreign language program at St. Charles offers students a safe and comfortable environment to explore a new language. Once students get to the high school level they may specialize in Spanish or choose from myriad alternatives such as French, German, Japanese, Latin or Chinese.
