Middle School Mathematics
When students enter the sixth grade they will be placed in math classes by ability. In order to properly place students we take into account several important items. The following items are added to give each student a “math total” in which we use to place students into a math course. At the end of each year students will be reevaluated for the next year.
Previous year quarter grades average
Math ISTEP+ score on a 100 point scale
Percent on the STAR Math test given in May
Teacher recommendation on a 100 point scale (this is based on overall work
ethic in class, class participation, completion of homework assignments,
and organization skills)
The following courses are offered in Middle School:
Accelerated Math 6 (Grade 6) – This course introduces and explores topics that provide a foundation for taking Accelerated Pre-Algebra in the 7th grade. The students must score high enough on their math total to be placed into this course. This course presents the same topics as Math 6, but each area will be covered in more depth and with more rigor. Topics in this course will include number sense, computation, algebra and functions, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, and problem solving.
In this course students will read, write, listen, ask questions, think, and communicate about math which will develop and deepen students’ understanding of mathematical concepts.

Accelerated Pre-Algebra (Grade 7) – This course introduces and explores topics that provide a foundation for taking Accelerated Algebra I in the 8th grade. The students must score high enough on their math total to be placed into this course. This course presents the same topics as Pre-Algebra, but each area will be covered in more depth and with more rigor. Students will be exposed to abstract applications with rational numbers, variable expressions, equations, inequalities, ratios, proportions, percents, number theory, graphing in a coordinate plane, geometry and its applications, square roots and right triangles, irrational numbers, polynomials, probability, and statistics.
Pre-Algebra (Grade 7) – This course is designed to reinforce and expand upon concepts and skills introduced in the 6th grade. The course will cover translating, reasoning, connecting, estimating, place-value, operations with rational numbers, evaluating expressions, solving simple equations, measurement, perimeter, area and volume formulas, ratios, proportions, percents, appropriate use of calculators, probability, statistics, data collection, graphing, and data analysis. This course emphasizes exponents, square-roots, irrational numbers, and applications for simple equations and inequalities with rational numbers. Students will also be introduced to factoring, notations, manipulations, and problem-solving techniques necessary for success in Algebra 1 as an 8th grader.
Accelerated Algebra 1 (Grade 8) – This course presents the same topics as Core 40 Algebra 1, but each area will be covered in more depth and with more rigor. Topics in this course include operations with real numbers, exponents, radicals, and variable expressions; solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities; relations and functions; pairs of linear equations and inequalities; factoring polynomials; algebraic fractions; absolute value, exponential, quadratic, cubic, and radical equations; and mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
Core 40 Algebra 1 (Grade 8) – Topics in this course include operations with real numbers, exponents, radicals, and variable expressions; solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities; relations and functions; pairs of linear equations and inequalities; factoring polynomials; algebraic fractions; quadratic, cubic, and radical equations; and mathematical reasoning and problem solving.
Math 8 (Grade 8) – Students use rational numbers, irrational numbers, exponents, powers, roots, ratios, proportions, and percentages. They solve simple linear equations and inequalities; graph functions and understand the concepts of slope and rate; construct shapes that meet given conditions and apply geometric concepts to solve problems; convert between units of measure and use rates and scale factors to solve problems; collect, organize, represent, and interpret relationships in data sets that have one or more variables; make decisions about how to solve problems and communicate their ideas.
Honors Geometry (Grade 8) – This rigorous course is offered as an elective course and meets before school three days a week. Each student must fill out an application during the spring of their 7th grade year if they are interested in this course. There is also a $500 fee for this course due at the beginning of the school year. The course is taught comparably to the Geometry HD course offered at MCCSC high schools. This is a high-level geometry course in which students will learn detailed information regarding geometric terms, postulates, theorems and their proof, inductive and deductive reasoning, and applications of these facts. The concepts covered include parallel and perpendicular lines, congruent triangles, inequalities in triangles, similarity, right triangles and right triangle trigonometry, quadrilaterals, circles, constructions, perimeter, area, volume, tessellations, transformations, and coordinate geometry.
St. Charles students that completed Algebra 1 and/or Honors Geometry have an option to take these courses for high school credit once they go onto Bloomington North or Bloomington South.
