Middle School Social Studies
The main cognitive goal of the Social Studies program at St. Charles is to help our students develop an understanding of the world and the social forces and historical events that have shaped and influenced it. The subject areas included for study are
history, geography, economics, sociology, and government. As an important aid to understanding these areas, students at all levels learn the skills of map reading, locating reliable information for resource purposes, and interpreting various kinds of graphs, charts, and data. There is also a focus within the program on critical thinking.
Students in middle school study world geography in greater depth and American History up to the point of the Civil War. At this level, Social Studies is closely linked to Language Arts and the student’s level of understanding is broadened by relevant literature such as novels and diaries. The Social Studies curriculum is enhanced by special class trips. As the eighth graders prepare for their spring trip to Washington DC, particular emphasis is placed on public service, democratic ideals, and good citizenship and its responsibilities.
